If you're rafting the Cangrejal River for the first time, it helps to know what's coming. Our river runs through the Pico Bonito rainforest and features a mix of calmer stretches and fast, technical whitewater — three sections in particular stand out as the highlights of the trip. Here's what to expect from each.
The Dinosaur
One of the signature rapids on our run, The Dinosaur is a faster, more technical stretch where the raft picks up speed through a series of standing waves. Your guide will walk you through exactly what to do before you reach it — this is where listening to the safety briefing really pays off.
The Mine Field
True to its name, this section is scattered with rocks that the raft has to navigate around, which means more active paddling and quick direction changes from the crew. It's a fun test of teamwork, especially for groups who've gotten into a rhythm earlier in the trip.
Coco Bongo
Coco Bongo tends to be a highlight for photos — a lively, splashy rapid that's exciting without being overwhelming for first-timers. It's often where the biggest smiles (and the most water in the boat) happen.
How we keep it safe
Every trip starts with a safety briefing and the right gear — helmet, life jacket, and a paddle you'll actually learn how to use before you need it. We run both a Classic Rafting Tour for a well-rounded first trip and an Advanced Rafting Experience for guests who want more out of the same stretch of river, so there's a good fit whether this is your first time on a raft or your fifth.
