Best Time to Raft the Cangrejal River: A Season-by-Season Guide

When the Cangrejal runs calm and when it runs big — a season-by-season guide to planning your rafting trip near La Ceiba.

There's no single "best" month to raft the Cangrejal River — it depends on what kind of day on the water you're after. La Ceiba's dry and wet seasons change the river in very different ways, and picking the right one (and the right tour) makes a real difference.

Dry Season (Roughly February–May)

La Ceiba's driest stretch runs from around February through May, with April typically the driest month on this stretch of coast. Lower rainfall generally means calmer, clearer water on the Cangrejal — a good match for first-timers, families, and anyone who wants the scenery and the rapids without quite as much intensity. It's the season we most often recommend for our Family-Friendly Rafting tour, though our Cangrejal River Whitewater Rafting classic run is also at its most approachable this time of year.

Wet Season (Roughly September–January, Peaking in October and November)

Honduras's Caribbean coast runs on its own calendar — rain here peaks later in the year than it does further inland, with October and November historically the wettest months around La Ceiba. More rain upstream means more water moving through the Cangrejal, which generally turns the same rapids faster and bigger. If you've already done the classic run and want more of a push, this is usually when our Advanced Rafting Experience feels most alive. Trips run throughout the wet season, but conditions can shift from day to day with the rain, so it's worth checking in with us close to your dates.

The Temperature Barely Changes

One thing that doesn't shift much with the season: the weather itself. La Ceiba stays warm and tropical nearly year-round, with daytime highs typically in the low-to-mid 80s°F. So the real seasonal decision isn't about comfort on the day — it's about how much water is actually moving through the river.

Matching a Tour to Your Season

A quick way to think about it: calmer dry-season water suits our Family-Friendly Rafting and Cangrejal River Whitewater Rafting tours; bigger wet-season water suits the Advanced Rafting Experience; and our Sunset Rafting Adventure is worth doing in either season, since it's really about timing your run for the golden-hour light over the jungle rather than the rapids themselves. Traveling with a larger group or want the river to yourselves? Group Rafting Packages and Private Rafting Tours can both be scheduled around whichever season fits your trip.

Whenever you're planning to visit, reach out before you book — we can tell you what the river's actually doing that week and help you pick the tour that matches it.
